Florida PIRG Urges:
Vote No On Amendment 3
In addition to deciding on our next
governor, voters in the upcoming
November election will have the
opportunity to decide on six ballot
questions for proposed constitutional
amendments.
Amendment 3, one of the amendments
proposed by the Florida
Legislature, would increase the
number of votes required to pass a
ballot initiative from a simple majority
to a super majority, making
it more difficult for voters to pass
ballot initiatives.
The ballot initiative acts as a check
on unresponsive legislatures and
powerful industry lobbyists when the concerns of voters are ignored.
Raising the voter approval requirement
for ballot initiatives would
prevent citizens from addressing
issues like cleaning up the Everglades
and banning indoor smoking
in restaurants.
It is already extremely difficult to
amend the state constitution due
to the high number of petitions
required, and Florida’s strict single subject review.
“Amendment 3 would force Floridians frustrated with legislative inaction to meet the highest voter approval threshold in the country,” said Advocate Brad Ashwell. |
